Are you looking for an opportunity to give back to your community this Thanksgiving? If so, we’ve got you covered. From fun runs to Cyber Monday shopping, there are plenty of ways to support the Food Bank and fight hunger before and after your turkey dinner!
Before the big day
1. Give back with your groceries
Safeway, NBC Bay Area and Telemundo 48’s Nourishing Neighbors fundraiser is running all month long in stores around the Bay Area. Shoppers can donate $10, which will go towards food items to be donated to local food banks.
Raley’s Food for Families fundraiser is back for another year. You can support local food banks by making a donation in-store at checkout, purchasing a special Food for Families holiday bear or donating online.
2. Sign up to serve food
Volunteer shifts go quickly during the holidays, but we often have space at our food distributions. You’ll be handing out food that your neighbors can use to make a hot meal and connecting directly with your community. See our urgent volunteer needs and sign up.
3. Find a food barrel
Want to donate food? Our orange food donation barrels are in too many locations to list them all here, but can be found at most public libraries, Hospice East Bay Thrift Shoppes and Travis Credit Union branches. You can also drop food off at our warehouses.
Thanksgiving
4. Work up your appetite
Kickstart your Thanksgiving morning with a walk, run or kids’ fun race and support the Food Bank
- Moraga Turkey Trot – Moraga Country Club
- Forma Gym Turkey Trot – Walnut Creek
- Brazen Racing Turkey Trot!
5. Dinner and a food drive
Planning a Friendsgiving or other fun get-together? Host a virtual food drive and encourage your guests to fight hunger without lifting a can. A page only takes a few minutes to set up, and it’s easy to donate.
Cyber Monday
6. Get ahead on your gift giving
Did you know you can give a donation to the Food Bank as a holiday present? Click the “dedicate my donation in honor or in memory of someone” box, located directly under your gift amount on our donations page and input their contact information. You can then send an ecard to let them know about their gift.
You can also use this option to give a gift in memory of a loved one.
7. Support while you shop
If you’re making purchases on Amazon this Cyber Monday, log in through www.smile.amazon.com, select Food Bank of Contra Costa and Solano from the list of partners, then shop as usual. Amazon Foundation will donate 0.5% of your purchases to the Food Bank.
Giving Tuesday
8. Go behind the scenes on Giving Tuesday
See the inner workings of the Food Bank this Giving Tuesday, as we open up our Concord and Fairfield warehouses for behind-the-scenes tours. You’ll learn what it takes to distribute millions of pounds of food in your community, catch a glimpse of staff and volunteers at work and get answers to all your burning questions about food insecurity in Contra Costa and Solano counties. Tours take about an hour and are available all day. Register here.
