Earlier this month, California’s newest State Budget was signed into law – and thanks to our Community Advocacy Partners and supporters like you, we are celebrating some major wins in the fight against hunger!
After releasing our 2024 Legislative Agenda this spring, our Advocacy Team went straight to work, meeting with our state representatives on Hunger Action and Capitol Action days. Eight of our Community Advocates, who have all experienced hunger themselves, also shared their stories and encouraged lawmakers to support food access.
We are so excited to report that every lawmaker who spoke to our advocates signed onto the bills we support! Though California faced a tough budget this year, critical programs that fight hunger were maintained.
That’s something to celebrate – and it wouldn’t be possible without you. Your support allows us to advocate for systemic change that can truly end hunger. We also want to thank every one of you who called and emailed your representatives or signed a petition in support of food access! Your voices were heard loud and clear.
Wins you made possible
- You saved Market Match – a program that supports neighbors in need and California farmers by providing matching funds for CalFresh recipients to spend at farm stands and farmers’ markets.
- Permanent authorization for the State Emergency Food Bank Reserve Program – ensures that there is a stockpile of healthy food available to support victims of disasters.
- CalFresh strong – lawmakers rejected cuts that would have ended a pilot program to raise the minimum CalFresh payment to $50 and reduced funding for senior nutrition programs. A new bill will also allow the state to continue an incentive program that helps CalFresh beneficiaries buy fresh produce at the store.
- School Meals for All – California will maintain its commitment to providing universal meals, a huge step forward for child hunger.
